Blackberry Compote with Greek Yogurt

This Blackberry Compote with Greek Yogurt is one of those simple recipes that feels luxurious with every bite. Whether you enjoy it for breakfast, as a midday snack, or a not-too-sweet dessert, this dish beautifully showcases the Mediterranean approach to eating: seasonal fruit, full-fat yogurt, and just enough natural sweetness to satisfy.

The inspiration for this recipe came from a visit to a family-run inn in northern Greece. Each morning, they served fresh Greek yogurt topped with homemade berry preserves—a nod to the tradition of using what’s in season. The blackberries were picked just steps from the kitchen, and the warm compote added the perfect contrast to the cool, tangy yogurt.

This version is modern but stays true to its roots. We gently cook blackberries with a touch of maple syrup until they soften and release their juices. No refined sugar, no fuss—just a bright, jammy topping that pairs beautifully with thick, creamy Greek yogurt. If you’ve only had store-bought fruit-on-the-bottom yogurts, this homemade version will be a revelation.

What makes it truly Mediterranean is not just the ingredients, but the experience. Take a moment to enjoy it slowly—maybe with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil or a sprinkle of walnuts. It’s a celebration of simple, nourishing foods that feed both body and soul.

FAQs: Blackberry Compote with Greek Yogurt

Can I use frozen blackberries?
Yes! Frozen blackberries work beautifully—no need to thaw first. Just extend cooking time by 2–3 minutes.

What type of Greek yogurt works best?
Plain, full-fat Greek yogurt is ideal for its creaminess and natural richness. You can use 2% or non-fat if preferred.

Is this a breakfast or dessert?
It can be both! It’s perfect for a light morning meal, afternoon snack, or even as a wholesome dessert after dinner.

Can I use honey instead of maple syrup?
Definitely. Both are natural sweeteners and work well in this compote. Start with 1½ tablespoons of honey and adjust to taste.

Here’s What People Are Saying:

“This program is a way of life, one which I have adopted successfully, and more importantly one which I have sustained for over one year now. My weight remains steady at 160 pounds (down from 216). My energy levels rival that of someone 20 years younger than me (I’m now 57), enabling me to exercise in any way that I desire, from lifting weights to intense cardio sessions.”
— Michael Little

“After completing my 10-week program, I had a regularly-scheduled appointment with my doctor. Because my cholesterol has always been above the normal range (229 last year) I requested that she test it again this year. I’m happy to report that my total cholesterol dropped to 169, which is in the normal range, and all my other numbers improved as well.”
— Claire C.
