“What’s for breakfast?”
The question I get asked most about the Mediterranean Diet is: “What do they eat for Breakfast?”. It’s easy to see why there is confusion. I probably have over 100 different Mediterranean Diet cookbooks from all over the Mediterranean and rarely is there even one Mediterranean Diet breakfast recipe. If you look online you will often find “Mediterranean Breakfast Recipes”, but they are frequently far from what is actually eaten there.
In the morning, something magical happens on dining tables across the Mediterranean. Breakfast transforms into a culinary affair that’s both a feast for the eyes and a treat for the palate. Think a spread of fresh fruits, whole grains, creamy yogurt, and a drizzle of golden olive oil — simple, yet incredibly delightful.
The Mediterranean diet, renowned for its heart-healthy benefits, offers Mediterranean breakfast recipes that are not just nourishing but also deeply rooted in age-old traditions. In this blog post, we’ll voyage through the Mediterranean, plate by plate, exploring breakfast choices that promise a delightful start to your day. Whether you’re a dedicated foodie or someone seeking a healthier morning routine, let’s dive deep into the world of Mediterranean diet breakfasts and discover what makes them so irresistibly delicious!
Here are 25 of our favorite traditional Mediterranean breakfasts. Most of them are easy to make and can be eaten for brunch, lunch or dinner as well.

1. Shakshuka (Eggs Baked with Tomatoes from Morocco)
Shakshuka is one of the most beloved Mediterranean breakfast recipes of all time. Not only is it simple and quick to make, but it also delivers an amazingly authentic taste. Fresh tomatoes stewed in extra virgin olive oil, cumin, and smoked paprika — all spiced up with a jalapeño pepper and topped with sunny-side up eggs. Furthermore, it’s a dish that works just as well for weekend brunch as it does for a weeknight dinner.

This single-serving Greek yogurt parfait is a wholesome and vibrant addition to your Mediterranean breakfast repertoire. A touch of orange zest elevates the whole thing with a refreshing burst of citrus.
3. Spanakopita Recipe: Greek Spinach and Feta Pie
A classic Spanakopita is one of the most beloved dishes in Greek cuisine, and for good reason. With its crisp, golden layers of phyllo dough and savory spinach-feta filling, it manages to be both comforting and fresh at the same time. Additionally, it’s versatile enough to serve at breakfast, brunch, or alongside a simple salad for lunch.

4. Authentic Mediterranean Breakfast: Ful Medames
There are few dishes that capture the spirit of a true Mediterranean breakfast like Ful Medames. This ancient fava bean stew has nourished families across Egypt, the Levant, and the Arabian Peninsula for thousands of years. Moreover, it embodies everything we value about traditional Mediterranean cooking: simplicity, plant-forward nourishment, bold flavor, and generous olive oil.

Moreover, it’s a traditional breakfast that is eaten often and travels beautifully into brunch territory as well.
